The practical guide

Renting a car in Malta: the practical guide

Everything a first-time visitor asks us before they book, answered plainly. We have hired cars to people finding their feet in Malta since 1945, so this is the version we would give a friend.

Before you book

The things worth knowing first

  • What you need to drive

A full driving licence, your passport or ID card, and a credit card in the main driver’s name. The minimum age is 21, and the main driver must have held a licence for a couple of years. Drivers aged 21 to 24 pay a young-driver fee, and we show it before you confirm.

  • How you pay

You settle up at the desk when we hand over the keys, so there is nothing to pay online first. A refundable deposit is held on the credit card at pickup and released at the end of the hire. No hidden fees, and the price we quote is the price you pay.

  • Delivery and collection

We bring the car to Malta Airport, your hotel or any address on the island, and collect it the same way. There is no depot shuttle and no counter queue. Airport delivery carries a small charge.

  • Insurance and the small print

Every hire comes with insurance, and we explain the excess and the options plainly before you commit. If you want the specifics for your trip, the FAQ covers the common questions and we are happy to talk it through.
