Malta and Gozo

Car hire for Gozo

Take your hire car across to Gozo on the ferry and explore the quieter island at your own pace, from the Ġgantija temples to the Dwejra coast.

The easiest way to see Gozo is to bring your own car. You drive straight onto the ferry at Ċirkewwa in the north of Malta, cross to Mġarr in about 25 minutes, and you only pay for the ferry on the return leg. There is no separate Gozo rental to book and no swapping cars at the harbour.

Gozo is greener, slower and quieter than Malta. With a car you set your own route: the prehistoric Ġgantija temples, the cliffs and inland sea at Dwejra, the citadel above Victoria, and the beaches at Ramla and San Blas. Many of the best spots sit away from the main bus routes, which is exactly where a car earns its keep.

We are a family-run Malta garage, established 1945, and we are happy to suggest a sensible route for a day trip or a longer stay. For a group, ask about the 7-seater so everyone travels together. Our driving in Malta guide has more on the roads and the ferry.

Good to know

Taking the car to Gozo

  • The Gozo ferry

Drive your Princess car straight onto the ferry at Ċirkewwa in the north of Malta. The crossing to Mġarr takes about 25 minutes, and you pay the ferry only on the way back, so there is nothing to arrange on the way over.

  • What to reach by car

With your own car you can take in the Ġgantija temples, the Dwejra coast, the citadel above Victoria and the red sand at Ramla Bay, all without waiting on a bus timetable.

  • Driving on Gozo

Roads are quieter and slower than on Malta. Drive on the left, keep some fuel in the tank as stations are fewer, and give yourself time to enjoy the views.

  • Room for the group

For a family or a group with beach gear, the 7-seater Peugeot Partner keeps everyone in one car. A couple touring light will be happy in an economy hatchback.
